Tour Omeka 2.0: CSV Import Plugin from Omeka on Vimeo.

  1. Create a Collection in Omeka before uploading a csv with the content for that Collection.
  2. Choose an appropriate Item Type for Items in that Collection.
  3. Consider which Item-specific metadata fields should be included for that Item Type, remembering that it is preferable to use Dublin Core where appropriate (i.e. only add Item-specific metadata fields for elements which are not already suitably described by Dublin Core).
  4. Existing Item Types can be edited to suit – Elements can be added or removed and the Item Type Name and/or Description can be changed. If none of the existing Item Types are suitable, create a new Item Type and add the pre-existing or new Elements that are needed. To alter the Item Type Element description after it has been saved, go to the Settings menu and select Item Type Elements. The csv upload plugin automatically maps columns to elements based on their column names, if column name is in the form: {ElementSetName}:{ElementName} e.g. Dublin Core: Title or Item Type Metadata: Interviewee. It is fine to have a mixture of both - the more that map automatically, the less time it will take.
  5. To include tags for each item, create a column with header: Tags and then tick the Tags box – no need to map to an Element.
  6. For files that have a URL – put them in a column titled Files and tick the Files box.
  7. If element headers have not been created in the csv, complete all required mappings before importing.
