FileZilla is an easy SFTP (secure file transfer protocol) client that can be installed with all common operating systems. Files can easily be transferred between the desktop computer and the remote data storage server by dragging-and-dropping the file icons.
1. Download and Install FileZilla
- Mac and Windows - Download the program file FileZilla
- For Windows: Double click file - follow installation instructions.
- For Mac: Drag the filezilla.app file to your Applications folder.
- Ubuntu - Install from the Ubuntu Software Centre app
- Find FileZilla in the Applications/Progams Directory
2. SFTP connection to the remote data storage
- Open File -> Site Manager .
- Click New Site and give it a useful name (e.g.”eRSA Data Storage”).
- For Host enter ‘sftp.ersa.edu.au’
- For Protocol select SFTP
- Logon Type is normal
- Enter you eRSA username and password
- Click Connect
On your first connection, you will be prompted to tick a box to confirm that you trust this host.
3. FileZilla connection
The left side of the FileZilla window will list the files of your computer.
The right side will contain the folders and files of eRSA’s data storage. The top panes contain the directory hierarchy, and the bottom panes show the contents of the selected directory.
- The default ‘working directory’ on logging in, will be a ‘home’ directory for your username. This is the same home directory you access when accessing the Tango HPC.
/home/users/username with ‘
username ’ replaced by your eRSA username.
Navigate to your data storage directory in the right side of the FileZilla screen.
- Double click on folder icons to navigate between directories.
- When data storage is allocated to a research group, a unique and identifiable “shortname” is given to the directory (folder). This directory is contained within the
/datadirectory, so the path to the directory is:
/data/shortname with ‘
shortname ’ replaced by the name of your allocated directory.
- You may find it easier to find your storage directory by typing `/data` next to "Remote site:" and clicking enter, then choosing from the available directories.
Drag and drop files and directories between your local computer (left-side panes) and your allocated directory (right-side panes).
Right click in the file list area to:
- Create a new directory or text file
- Delete, download or rename files or directories, etc.
- Edit a text document (you may need to adjust FileZilla/Edit -> Settings/Preferences -> File Editing to ensure documents open in your local computer’s default text editor.)
- After editing on your computer, FileZilla will upload the new version of the file to your remote storage.
